Rugged Keyboard and Input Device Capabilities for Demanding Applications

Rather than treating the keyboard as an afterthought, we engineer it as a fully specified subsystem that works seamlessly within the overall solution.

Complete Customisation from Driver Board to Keycaps

One of the strengths of our offering is the depth of customisation available. Every unit can be designed around the specific requirements of the project, starting with the driver board itself. The PCB, key matrix, firmware and interface electronics are all developed under our control, which means we can specify USB 2.0 full-speed, serial, CAN-bus or other protocols without introducing third-party modules that risk obsolescence.

Keycaps are typically POM with a sprayed-black finish and laser-etched legends for durability and clean illumination. Layouts can be completely non-standard if needed with extra function keys, rearranged clusters or integrated trackballs, while complete custom enclosures can be made and finished to customer specifications.

An internal EMC scan is frequently included to help meet MIL-STD-461G shielding requirements. This level of control lets us deliver a keyboard that truly fits the mechanical and electrical envelope of the host system.

Materials, Sealing and Mechanical Design

The mechanical construction aligns with the rugged displays and panel PCs we supply. Sealing reaches IP65 as standard, with IP68 options available when the application demands it.

Full-travel rubber-dome-and-carbon-pill switches provide a crisp 3 mm travel and a rated life of ten million actuations, giving operators the tactile feedback they expect while remaining fully waterproof.

Electronics are protected with acrylic conformal coating, and units are tested to MIL-STD-810G for shock, vibration, temperature and humidity, as well as relevant sections of DO-160 for aviation or maritime use.

Extended-temperature variants can be validated when required, ensuring the input device performs reliably alongside the display in the same harsh conditions.

Backlighting Engineered for Real Environments

Backlighting is another area where our engineering supports the solutions we deliver.

Standard LED illumination is USB-powered (typically 250 mA, up to 400 mA maximum) and can be controlled via external PWM for precise dimming. Fibre-optic light guides provide more uniform distribution when needed, and full NVIS-compatible Green B versions are available for night-vision applications without excessive bloom.

Colour options are flexible for non-NVIS work, allowing us to match legend illumination to the ambient lighting scheme of a vehicle cab, operations console or control room.

Low Minimum Quantities and Long-Term Availability

Because we retain full ownership of the design - mechanics, PCB, firmware and tooling - we can support custom programmes at low minimum order quantities.

Development costs remain realistic even for modest volumes, and the same control over the bill of materials underpins the long-term availability (often 10-15 years) that defence and industrial programmes require. In practice this means we can start from a proven platform and adapt key count, mounting, connector type, backlight spectrum or pointing-device integration to suit the exact application.

By combining these rugged keyboards and pointing devices with our display and embedded expertise, we are able to offer customers a coherent, fully specified HMI solution rather than a collection of separate components. The result is an input device that is engineered to the same standards as the display it sits beside - something technical teams value highly when commercial keyboards simply will not survive the environment.
