Selecting a display and user interface for a professional application involves more than choosing a panel with the right size and resolution. PCAP touchscreens can support multi-touch gestures and can be designed to operate reliably when users are wearing gloves or when the interface is exposed to wet or outdoor conditions. This makes them suitable for applications where traditional touch interfaces may need to accommodate more demanding operating environments.

However, touch is not always the most appropriate input method. Depending on the application, additional input devices such as custom keyboards, trackballs or pointing devices can be incorporated to provide tactile feedback or more specialised control.

The choice of interface should therefore reflect how the equipment will actually be used, rather than being based solely on the display technology.

Custom cable assemblies, wire harnesses and connectors can be engineered to meet specific application requirements. Examples include overmoulded or IP-rated designs for moisture protection, high-flex constructions for applications involving repeated movement, and EMI-shielded designs where electrical noise is a concern.

The cabling needs to complement the display and interface requirements. Considering these elements early can help reduce the risk of signal integrity or mechanical issues further through the development process.

Manufacturing, Testing and Quality

Once the display and interface have been specified, the manufacturing process also needs to be considered, particularly for applications where consistency, traceability and long-term support are important.

A manufacturing capability that covers the complete route from prototype through to volume production can help maintain consistency as a product moves through development and into production. Depending on the application, this can include PCB assembly, optical bonding in controlled environments, system integration, environmental testing and final assembly.

For medical and other regulated applications, manufacturing processes and quality management systems are particularly important. ISO 9001 provides a framework for general quality management, while ISO 13485 is specifically focused on quality management for medical devices.

These standards support structured processes around areas including documentation, traceability, risk management and process consistency.

When specifying a display and user interface, individual technical specifications only tell part of the story. Brightness, display technology and touch capability are important, but they need to be considered alongside environmental requirements, interconnects, manufacturing processes and the expected product lifecycle.

Taking a system-level approach can help ensure that the individual elements work together effectively and are suitable for the intended application.
