Choosing the Right Display for Kiosk and Retail Applications

A display is often the first part of a kiosk or retail system that a customer interacts with. It needs to attract attention, present information clearly and respond reliably to repeated use. In many applications, simply selecting a standard commercial screen is not enough.
Kiosks, point-of-sale systems, digital signage and interactive retail displays can be exposed to bright lighting, constant customer interaction and demanding operating conditions. The display therefore needs to be selected around the environment and the way it will be used, rather than treated as an off-the-shelf component.

Visibility in different lighting conditions
One of the first considerations when specifying a kiosk or retail display is where it will be installed.
A screen positioned inside a shop may have to deal with strong overhead lighting, reflections or light coming through windows. Outdoor-facing kiosks and displays can face even more challenging conditions, particularly direct sunlight.
Brightness, contrast, surface treatments and optical performance all contribute to how easily information can be read. RDS provides high-brightness TFT displays up to 3,000 nits, along with optical bonding and anti-glare options to improve readability in demanding environments.
The right specification will depend on the application. A display intended for an indoor point-of-sale terminal does not necessarily require the same brightness or environmental protection as a self-service kiosk installed close to an entrance or outside a building.
Touchscreens need to withstand repeated use
Touch interaction has become an important part of the customer experience across retail.
Self-service kiosks, ticketing systems, information points and POS terminals can be used hundreds or thousands of times during their operating life. The touchscreen therefore needs to provide consistent, accurate interaction while also being able to withstand everyday wear.
Projected capacitive, or PCAP, touchscreens are well suited to many kiosk and retail applications because they support responsive multi-touch interaction and can be specified with features such as glove compatibility and anti-glare coatings.
The choice of front glass and surface treatment is also important. In a public-facing installation, the front panel may need additional protection against impact, scratches or deliberate damage.

Durability is part of the display specification
A retail display is rarely operating in a controlled office environment.
Kiosks and self-service terminals are designed for regular public interaction, meaning the display and its surrounding enclosure need to be considered as part of the same system.
Depending on the application, this can involve IP-rated protection, impact-resistant surfaces, rugged mechanical construction and careful thermal management. RDS can integrate displays into bespoke enclosures designed around the requirements of the complete system.
This approach can be particularly useful where the display needs to fit a specific enclosure, mounting arrangement or product design rather than being installed as a standard monitor.
Optical bonding and mechanical integration
Display performance is not only determined by the LCD or touchscreen itself.
Optical bonding can improve the relationship between the display layers, helping to reduce reflections and improve readability. It can also form part of a more robust display assembly where the screen needs to withstand demanding operating conditions.
Mechanical integration is equally important. The display may need to fit within a custom metal enclosure, sit behind a protective front panel or align precisely with other elements such as payment terminals, cameras or physical controls.
This is where display engineering becomes particularly valuable. Rather than selecting a screen in isolation, the display can be designed around the rest of the kiosk.
Designing the display around the application
There is no single display specification that suits every kiosk or retail application.
A digital signage system may prioritise brightness and viewing distance. A self-service kiosk may place greater emphasis on touch performance and impact resistance. A POS terminal may need a compact display with reliable touch interaction and a carefully designed mechanical interface.

Developing the complete HMI
For kiosk and retail manufacturers, the display is only one part of the customer interface. It needs to work alongside the embedded computer, enclosure, connectivity and software to create a system that is reliable and easy to use.
By considering these elements together from the beginning of a project, potential issues around fit, thermal performance, connectivity and usability can be addressed before production.
