Future-Proofing an Unmanned Ground Vehicle Platform Through Strategic Memory Selection
Overview
A defence technology manufacturer was developing a next-generation Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) platform for remote reconnaissance and operational support applications. As the project moved towards production, concerns around the long-term availability of key DRAM and NAND memory devices prompted a review of the platform's component strategy.
With operational equipment expected to remain in service for many years, ensuring continuity of supply was critical. We worked closely with the customer to identify memory solutions that would support long-term manufacture while reducing supply chain risk.
The Challenge
The UGV control system had been designed around a specific memory device selected during the initial development phase. While technically suitable, increasing market volatility and changing supplier priorities raised concerns over future availability.
For defence applications, where product lifecycle can extend significantly beyond those of commercial electronics, replying on a single memory manufacturer introduced unnecessary risk.
The customer needed a strategy that would improve long-term resilience without requiring redesign of the embedded computing platform, or impacting programme timelines.
The Solution
Working alongside the engineering team, RDS reviewed approved memory devices and identified alternative DRAM and NAND solutions capable of meeting the same performance, reliability and environmental requirements.
Leveraging the global sourcing network and market intelligence available through the Volex Group, RDS provided visibility into manufacturer roadmaps, lifecycle status and regional supply availability.
This enabled the customer to qualify multiple memory options within the design, creating a more robust sourcing strategy while maintaining system consistency and performance.
The Outcome
By addressing potential supply chain challenges during the development phase, the customer significantly reduced the risk of future component obsolescence and supply disruption.
The embedded computing platform remained unchanged from a performance perspective, while procurement teams gained access to a broader range of approved sourcing options.
The result was a more resilient defence platform, better positioned to support long-term production and sustainment requirements throughout its operational life.
