Bespoke Kiosk Solutions Designed for Healthcare
Bespoke Kiosk Solution for Healthcare Environments
Overview
RDS partnered with a healthcare-sector client to design and manufacture a bespoke self-service kiosk that could reliably operate in demanding public environments. The solution needed to combine information delivery and point-of-sale (POS) functionality in a single, robust unit suitable for constant daily use.
From initial concept through to volume production, RDS delivered a fully compliant, production-ready kiosk tailored precisely to the client’s operational, technical and environmental requirements.
Challenge & Objectives
The client required a kiosk that could be deployed in busy healthcare settings, where reliability, durability and ease of use were critical. Off-the-shelf solutions failed to meet the combination of performance, robustness and custom integration required.
Key objectives included:
A large 21.3-inch touch display to ensure clear visibility for a wide range of users
Sunlight-readable screen performance, suitable for varied lighting conditions
A durable metal enclosure capable of withstanding heavy, repeated interaction
A smash-resistant front panel for enhanced security and longevity
Integrated POS functionality alongside informational use
An embedded PC platform capable of running full Windows and the client’s application software
A balance of strength, stability and portability for ease of deployment
Design & Development
RDS led the full mechanical and electronic design process, beginning with detailed concept development in SolidWorks. The kiosk was engineered from the ground up, with careful attention paid to structural integrity, user interaction points and internal component layout.
A one-off prototype was produced to validate the design before committing to volume manufacture. During this phase, RDS prioritised:
Structural strength without excessive weight
Reliability under constant, repetitive use
Protection of critical internal components
Ease of assembly and future serviceability
An embedded computing board was selected that offered an optimal balance of low power consumption, cost efficiency and performance, while still supporting a full Windows operating system and the client’s bespoke software.

Prototyping & Validation
The prototype allowed the client to assess both the physical design and functional performance of the kiosk in real-world conditions. Feedback at this stage was highly positive, confirming that the solution met both technical and aesthetic expectations.
The successful prototype provided a clear path to scale, with only minor refinements required before moving into production.
Production & Manufacturing
Following prototype approval, the client commissioned a production batch of 50 units. Manufacturing was carried out at RDS’s facility in Westerham, UK, ensuring close control over quality, assembly and testing.
RDS managed the full production lifecycle, including:
Component sourcing and assembly
Quality control and consistency checks
Compliance and testing readiness
Preparation for deployment
Outcome & Impact
The final solution delivered a robust, professional-grade kiosk tailored specifically for healthcare use. The client praised RDS’s collaborative approach and ability to translate an initial concept into a reliable, scalable production unit:
“RDS were great in turning our idea into a production unit.”
This project demonstrates RDS’s capability to deliver end-to-end kiosk solutions, from initial design and prototyping through to compliant, UK-based production. It highlights RDS’s strength in creating bespoke hardware that performs reliably in demanding, real-world environments.
