Touch screens are used in so many different environments and applications these days from ATMs, self-service in shops and restaurants to smartphones and mobile devices, and with the Covid-19 pandemic have become a subject of great concern. Constantly cleaning the screens is time-consuming and not always possible but customers and the general public need to be assured that these screens are safe to use.

How does Kastus technology stop the bacteria from growing?

The 24/7 touch screen protection technology is built directly into the screen providing antimicrobial defense on coated surfaces for life. Once the coating has been applied to the surface in the factory it is Sintered into the top layer of the surface forming an immobilized thin film that is not only permanent and scratch-resistant but also extremely durable. The coating uses a photocatalytic process which uses light and ambient moisture to generate a chemical reaction that generates oxygen radicals to eliminate the growth of harmful bacteria. Protection is ‘Always on’.

 

Existing screens can also have this 24/7 Antimicrobial and Antiviral protection with the Kastus tempered glass screen protector solution. Available in sizes from 4” up to 34” and are easy to apply, crystal clear, and antishatter.

 

Kastus technology is the ultimate light-powered coating technology. While other technologies need exposure to a UV light source such as a lamp in order to work the Kastus technology works effectively with both indoor and outdoor light.

Here’s why:

Let’s start with the tech first then I’ll explain how that enables us to produce disruptive new innovations such as our new screen protectors.

 

In the antimicrobial world typically Kastus’ main competition would be silver-based technologies or light-activated technologies that rely on UV alone for activation. Sometimes these are branded… often not at all.

 

First of all, let’s review Kastus’ most relevant and important difference. No other coating technology we have seen can offer double protection against BOTH viruses AND bacteria.

 

Apart from SA and E. coli bacteria, Kastus is also effective against >99% of Human Coronavirus and a host of other tough to fight everyday viruses.

 

Kastus technology is the ultimate light-powered coating tech that is activated by natural light. While other technologies need exposure to a UV light source such as a lamp in order to work…. Kastus works effectively with both indoor and outdoor light which means it's much less hassle to integrate.

 

The Kastus coating is photocatalytic in nature and unlike silver is non-leaching. This is good news for the environment but also in terms of longevity.

 

Here is why…. Kastus is primarily powered by light and air which are both infinite resources. As long as the surface remains intact the coating will continue to work on and on. This is unlike silver-based coatings where the silver needs to leave the surface to poison the bacteria. By definition, these metal-based fuel resources will ultimately run out and have their effectiveness reduced over time.

 

A further key point of difference is that Kastus tech is a photophysical process whereby the bacteria is essentially bashed until its DNA is broken down. This means that bacteria cannot build up immunity to the Kastus process.  

 

Contrast this to metal-based technologies which operate by poisoning the bacteria. Any bacteria that is not killed can ultimately build up resistance and become stronger. 

Kastus is therefore part of the solution to improving the AMR (or Antimicrobial Resistance) crisis which most experts claim will be a bigger global killer than cancer by 2050.

 

Finally, as our coating is not designed to leave the surface of the glass, once it’s locked in during manufacturing it’s extremely durable and designed to last the lifetime of the substrate.
