The Blizzard Blows in from the East

The new Blizzard development kit from Review Display Systems is aimed at reducing the development time for engineers developing multimedia applications around the 1GHz Ti Sitara ARM Cortex-A8 CPU.

Each plug and play development kit includes one TDM-3730 system on module (SOM) CPU board, one Blizzard multimedia development base board, a 4.3 inch TFT panel or 7 inch TFT display, plus cables, a PSU and choice of downloadable operating systems including Windows CE6, Linux and Android (Check for latest versions).

The TDM -3730 SOM features the system core, with the 1Ghz TI Sitara 3730 CPU and the TMS320c64x+™ 800 MHz DSP core. The graphics chipset is the POWERVR SGX530 plus also on board is 512Mb of system memory and 512Mb of NAND Flash storage, the 802.11b/g Wireless LAN and SMSC LAN 9220 network controller all on the compact 68mmx 50 mm board.

The TDM-3730 plugs into the Blizzard development base board via a 200 pin SO-DIMM connector and the Blizzard base board allows a rich break out of interface features. Measuring 147mm x 102mm, the board features connectivity for any display via LVDS, TTL, HDMI, VGA and S-Video Interface connectors. Storage can be expanded with the SATA and micro-SD card interfaces, together with USB connections. The 3 standard USB and one mini USB connectors can also be used to increase communication to and from the board. This is further enhanced with LAN, RS-232, RS-485, SPI, I2C connectivity or even connection over 3G via an optional data module.

Included in this kit is a complete downloadable software stack that gives to a quick and easy way to load onto the SoM to meet your applications requirements. This coupled with the supplied TTL TFT panels ensure that everything is available out of the box to get you up and running quickly.

The combined CPU and development board offers engineers a comprehensive way of working with the powerful, low power ARM CPU hardware and software. These development kits are available on a next day delivery from just £175 pounds.

Once development is complete RDS and Technexion can support you through the next phase by designing and building bespoke base boards and even plastics to help quickly move your ideas into production.

Recognising the demand for ever shorter development cycles, Review Display Systems Ltd have joined forces with Taiwan based TechNexion to deliver a complete range of flexible ARM based systems that are built around a highly optimized CPU "System On Module"(SOM) into the UK industrial market.

Included in this capability is a complete software stack that gives to a quick and easy way to configure the boards and I/O baseboards to meet your applications requirements or if needs be to design your own baseboard to fit the application.

The SOM CPU boards are offered using three configurations including the TAO -3530 which features the TI OMP 3530 600MHz ARM Cortex -A8, integrated DSP and POWERVR SGX530 for 2D and 3D graphics acceleration, the TAM-3517 featuring the TI Sitara AM3517 600 MHz again with the POWERVR SGX and the TDM-3730 with the TI Sitara DM3730 1GHz and the POWERVR SGX530.

TechNexion's standard software support is available for WindowsCE ,BSP with source code and configuration scripts for the development kits, Linux 2.6.x with binary test images and full source code of x-loader, u-boot, kernel and support packages are available and Android.

Review Display Systems Ltd has recently introduced the new 3003-series Mini-ITX board range from Fujitsu. Aimed at industrial applications these new boards are based around the AMD A55E controller Hub and the AMD T44R or T56N processors.

The compact (170mm x 170mm) D3003-S3 has been designed for challenging applications that require Dual-Core performance with a 24-bit dual channel LVDS interface for driving large display panels such as digital signage type applications.

The extended -lifetime boards are capable of working in operating temperatures of zero to sixty degrees centigrade making them ideal for automation, medical and kiosk applications.

Additional main board features include, Dual GbE LAN, serial ATA III RAID onboard and a mSATA socket for Flash Storage. The mSATA flash socket offers users increased data transfer rates speeding up application run times. The board also features 8-bit GPIO onboard, 6 USB ports and support for up to 8GB RAM.

An on-board DC to DC converter accepts power from a single 19-24 Vdc source. Several other special industrial features are also on-board including a watchdog and the system management controller which monitors and adjusts temperature levels and cooling fans regardless of operating system.

Review Display Systems Ltd has recently launched a new range of standard Projective Capacitive touch screens from AMT. These panels have been specifically designed to fit the most common industrial TFT screen sizes including 10.4 inch, 12.1 inch and 15 inch.

Projective capacitive technology offers a number of advantages to the industrial user including a surface hardness of 5 Mohs, so reducing damage through scratching during operation. The Light transmissivity of 88% and good performance in high ambient light improves display readability plus the user can benefit from the option of multi-touch operation.

The environmental performance is good too, with an operating temperature of -10C to +70 Degrees Centigrade, the front can be sealed to IP65 and gloved hand operation can also be supported. AMT use a laminated design where the sensor is sandwiched between two glass layers this protects the sensor for long life operation and also increases the strength of the touch overlay.

The bespoke controller board will support Microsoft Windows 7 HID digitizer, Vista, XP, Linux and Android operating systems and allows support for single finger touch or dual finger touch with flicks, zoom-in, zoom-out functions.

The panels have been design for simple integration within systems, supported by a detailed guide to help engineers mount the panels, full evaluation kits are available.

AMT also support small size PC sensors such as 4.3 inch and 7 inch plus a complete custom design service is also available.

RDS is pleased to introduce NEC's range of Industrial LED Backlight High Brightness TFT Displays.

Many High Bright displays that are available in the market today are based on "Third party" modified consumer grade TFT's which offer no long term security to the industrial user. NEC has now introduced a range panels specifically designed and manufactured to be High Bright Displays from day one.

Review Display Systems can now offer this range with display sizes starting at 5.7" up to 12.1" these are all capable of achieving a display luminance between 800 cd/m2 & 1000 cd/m2. This is made possible by utilizing high efficiency LED's that is unique to NEC. Screen resolutions from VGA (640X480) up to XGA (1024X768) are available with a choice of CMOS or LVDS Interface.

As part of the Industrial design features supported by NEC, the LED Backlight Systems used on these high brightness TFT's is field replaceable. As a result, they can be easily removed and replaced on site. These LED systems are available as standard parts and can refresh your TFT display after many years of use.

NEC is also able to offer their own recommended LED Backlight Driver PCB. When choosing an LED Backlight TFT Display you need to be careful to ensure that the backlight driver runs the LED's at the correct frequency and so avoid long term damage. This is taken care of by selecting NEC's recommended boards. These boards can also be supplied with standard cables to mate with the chosen TFT Display.

Review Display Systems have recently added the range of Industrial OLED displays from Raystar to their product portfolio, comprising of both standard graphic and alphanumeric modules plus a comprehensive custom design service, all aimed at the industrial display user.

OLED technology offers a number of key advantages over monochrome LCD technology including a true lit dot display in a range of colours, wide viewing angles, and lower power consumption than a standard LED backlight LCD module. Operating temperature is -40 to +80 deg C making the technology ideal for extreme environments. There is also a sunlight readable filter option for outdoor operation.

The range comprises of LCD module compatible units in 2 lines of 8 characters to 4 lines of 20 characters and graphic modules of 50x16 dots up to 128x64 dots. Standard colours include red, white, green, yellow and blue. MTBF figures of 100k hours are possible in both yellow and Green.

RDS can also offer a full customer design service with COB or COG technology reducing the product thickness to a minimum.

Review Display Systems has recently launch a compact 7 inch Monitor kit comprising of a high spec WVGA TFT panel and associated driver card allowing both Video and VGA input.

The TFT display panel features a native resolution of 800x 480 pixels and a screen brightness of 350 cd/m² with a 140 degree viewing cone left to right and 130 degrees top to bottom. The panel also features wide temperature operation from -20 to + 70C making it idea for mobile applications. The compact design of the screen measuring 165mm x 104.5 mm x 5.2mm makes it ideal for applications where space is at a premium.

The interface board comes with all the associated cables to connect to both the TFT panel, LED backlight driver and the operator control board. So all you need to supply is a 12 VDC input, for vehicle mounted applications a wide input range regulator is also available as an option, this protects the display and interface board from spikes, voltage drops and shorts.

The user can select the input source via the on-screen menu from either composite video or VGA input via standard headers on the board.

A touch screen option can also be supplied with a USB interface and RDS also offer a range of compact PC solutions ideal for providing the data input to the screen.

3.5inch Embedded Single board computer with N450/D510 Intel Atom

Review Display Systems Ltd have introduced a new compact industrial motherboard based around Intel's new N450/ D510 processor range.

The 3.5inch subcompact format board offers a comprehensive range of features aimed at industrial designers working on applications where space is at a premium. The Gene-LN05 can accommodated up to 2GB of DDR2 667/800 SODIMM , has two Gigabit Ethernet ports, 18bit LVDS or VGA output to drive a display and onboard resistive touch screen controller.

The N450 1.6Ghz processor option allows the board to operate fan less with just a passive heat sink where the D510 does require a fan to cool it.

The LN05 also has 2 Channel HD audio, two SATA 2 interface ports, seven USB 2.0 ports and six COM ports making it ideal for control and monitoring applications. Operation is from a 5 or 12V dc source.

The overall board size is just 146mm x 102mm, and system expansion is available through two mini-card expansion ports.

Light Blue Optic's revolutionary Holographic laser projection products are set to change the way we think about how we configure the Human Machine Interface.

Founded in 2004 as a spin out from Cambridge University, and after a 6 year, 26 million USD investment and development program the first of the commercial range of products are just being released with a commited development path for the future.

Holographic laser projection utillises a small red, green and blue laser, which fires at a proprietary FLOCS microdisplay, the display is controlled by LBO's own ASIC device which controls a range of diffraction images on the display and it is this that steers the laser light to form the high resolution, wide throw angle, focus free image.

Products currently available are, Light Work, which is a compact basic monitor and Light Touch, which is a integrated system product with a projected IR touch capability replecating a complete HMI system.

New Touch Screen Technology for AMT

Review Display Systems have recently introduced the rugged new Glass-Film-Glass (GFG) touch technology from AMT. This new technology offers users a strong Glass surface layer that will work with a gloved hand.

AMT have developed this technology by utilising there expertise in the manufacture of standard 4,5 and 8 wire touch screens, and added a glass layer over the film surface. This provides an economical solution for users who were against the use of resistive technology because of the easily damaged top surface.

The GFG technology screen retains the functions and features of the standard resistive touch screen such as sensitivity to inputs from gloved operators or stylus/ non finger inputs and also has the added benefit of an increase in the operational temperature range from -30 C to + 80 C making it ideal for industrial applications in extreme conditions.

GFG panels have an 81% light transmission rate and a surface hardness of greater than Mohs 5 which reduces the need for further protective layers.

Screen sizes can be from 3 inch to 19 inch and durability of 10 Million touches for 4 or 8 wire based products or 36 Million touches for 5 wire solutions can be achieved.

RDS have recently introduced a new 2.3 inch round active matrix TFT panel idea for instrumentation and automation applications that need to replace a dial type display.

The display active area equates to a dial diameter of 58mm and the display incorporates the latest anti-glare and wide-view film technology.

The module design is a compact 75x 75 x 7.6mm making the unit easily stackable and features a high bright screen at 1000cd/m and a contrast ratio of 400:1. The viewing angle is 70 degrees North, East and West and 50 degrees South.

The natural screen resolution is 240x240 dots with a pixel pitch of .24mm allowing good graphic representation on the screen of dials and bar graphs.

The whole module is designed to cope with wide temperature operation from -40 degrees to + 85 degrees Centigrade and the electrical interface has been designed to run from a 16 bit micro.

A New Discovery, the "compact" Atom

Review Display Systems Ltd have recently introduced a new low power, compact single board computer ideal for applications where space and power are at a premium.

The compact board design measures only 102mm x 146mm and will fit behind a standard 5.7 inch format display. By utilising Intel's new Atom processor power consumption is reduced to a typical 14 Watts, making the board ideal for portable or mobile applications.

The PEB-2737 has a wealth of on-board features including a 24bit LVDS interface to directly drive a wide range of TFT panels. Also included is one Gigabit Ethernet support, a type II compact flash socket, seven USB connections as well as 2x SATA and 1X EIDE connections and two RS232 ports.

Two processor options are available offering either 1.1Ghz or 1.6 Ghz with a FSB of 400/533 Mhz. The board will support up to 2GB of system memory and features the Intel system control Hub US15W.

The compact size and low power requirements also mean that the board is ideal for applications that are sealed or have a serious space problem. The lack of heat generated reduces the need for expensive thermal management components and the possible compromise to sealing the system.

Aaeon , one of Taiwan’s leading industrial single board computer manufacturers has launched a Atom based version of its popular Gene series of compact 3.5 inch single board computers. Based on the Industrial Intel N270 1.6Ghz CPU with a front side bus of 533MHz. The board also uses the Intel 945GSE Graphics chip and will support up to 2GB of DDR2 memory at 400 or 500 MHz.

The board features two Intel 82574L Ethernet controllers providing communication to multiple gigabit networks enabling use in high bandwidth network communication applications.

Additional features include PCI expansion, SATA and IDE support, four USB 2.0 ports and 4 COM ports, LVDS LCD connectivity touch screen controller and wide DC voltage input range ideal for mobile applications.

Review Display Systems have recently increased their range of compact TFT panels with the introduction of a 2.2 inch QVGA resolution panel.

The PTO02232 is a low power, compact format display measures 49mmx41mmx2.6mm and is ideal for handheld battery powered applications. Power consumption for the 320(RGB)x240 pixel display including back light is 315mw giving an overall screen brightness of 185cd/m..

The module features a viewing angle of 130degrees in both the vertical and horizontal plane and the display is transmissive TFT technology with white LED backlighting.

The interface is either system parallel or serial and the unit has an operating temperature range of -20 to +70 degrees centigrade.

The module design can be customised around the standard TFT substrate allowing design flexibility when incorporating the panel into a product.

Review Display Systems continues to increase there range of Small TFT panels with the addition of the 4.3 inch, PT0434827-A001, module.

This panel features a screen resolution of 480RGB x 272 pixels in a compact package size of just 105.5mm x 67.2mm x 5mm. The high contrast amorphous TFT panel is transmissive and uses LED backlight technology, this results in a contrast ratio of 400:1 and a screen brightness of 300cd/m making the unit ideal for many outdoor, battery driven applications.
The panel also features an integrated resistive touch screen with a surface hardness of 3H and integrated panel voltage generation to help reduce the design costs of your overall system.

RDS can provide a dedicated application solution through the integration of this panel and a compact x-scale based motherboard allowing users to reduce the time to market for an application.
