If you didn't find a standard OLED module design that meets your applications requirements then there is always the possibility to go to a full custom design. This also opens up the option of the use of enunciators and segmented types of display to achieve the look that you require. The customisation of OLED modules follows the same basic custom design rules as those used for LCD. However it is a very different technology and has some advantages over LCD. From a mechanical design point of view there is no requirement to deal with any form of backlight technology since OLED is a lit dot technology. However, you will need to consider the emitted colour: currently we offer single colour Yellow, Green, Red, Blue and White displays with future options for multi colour zones. The driver/ controller circuit is available as COB (Chip On Board) or COG (Chip On Glass). COG will simply give you a "piece" of glass with an FPC tail and so a very compact module design.A typical application where custom design is popular is in volume products and where mechanical dimensions are critical either because of design or size reasons. Audio, automotive, telecom, medical, home appliances, handheld instruments etc.Another important reason to choose OLED is the fact that the average current is significant less than a traditional LCD with a LED backlight, making it ideal for battery powered projects. Older VFD applications could also benefit from an update to OLED, the same wide viewing angle, lit dot display using less current and with a longer life time to half brightness, and still operating temp -40 + 85 deg C.Sunlight readability is always an issue for electronic displays. An OLED's performance is reasonable in high ambient light, this can be improved still further with the addition of specialist optimization techniques, such as polarization, for true sunlight readability.
